PFOS is used as mist suppressant agent in the surface treatment industry for several applications: functional and decorative chrome plating of metals, etching and chrome plating of plastics.
Chemical and physical alternatives to PFOS (existing and under development) for these surface treatments are detailed in a report published by the German Federal Environmental Agency (Umwelt Bundesamt, UBA). Potential barriers to switching to these alternatives are also described in the report.
