Description:

This report studies the current commercial availability and uses of PFAS and their alternatives in lubricants and hydraulic oils. The report highlights the unique multifunctional role of PFAS in lubricants, as well as the technical and economic challenges associated with substitution by non-fluorinated alternatives. It also points out that, without strong market drive, the use of PFAS-based lubricants, mainly in critical or extreme conditions, is likely to continue. Finally, the document makes specific recommendations to international organizations, governments, companies and industry associations, to facilitate the transition to safer alternatives while meeting performance requirements.
