To complement the first edition of this study published in 2021, the Washington State Department of Ecology, in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health, evaluated alternatives to PFAS (chemical risk, exposure, performance, cost, and availability) in food packaging (paper, paperboard, or other plant-based material) intended to contain and serve freshly prepared food: food contact paper (bags and sleeves), bowls, flat serviceware (which includes products such as plates and trays), open-top containers (French fry containers, and paper cones), closed containers (bakery boxes, and deli containers).
The first edition of this study evaluated alternatives for other food packaging: food contact paper (wrappers and liners), tableware (plates, food trays), pizza boxes.
